Personally... I've never understood the whole 3/4 ton diesel truck thing. We always had a ton here up until about 10 years ago and the last one damn near broke us. Now the running around gets done with a Ranger or a caravan... and the heavy stuff gets done with the tandem. I wouldn't want to be without a light pickup but I don't see the need to drive a 60k pickup that could require 5k in repairs at any given moment. I also find the mid-late 90's tandems or even a heavy single to be a fairly durable container that can be bought reasonably cheap today. I don't think I'd want a light single myself, mainly because I want no part of dealing with a truck and hydraulic brakes... Your mileage may vary.

As far as cost goes here, we license/insure/inspect and put that tandem on the road for less money annually than the ton cost... although it does gobble some money at times for big parts. Overall it's still cheaper tho.
