Not sure if it's available south of the line but we have a bloat reduced alfalfa. AC Grazeland BR. Available through pickseed. Have pastures seeded with 60% alfalfa and never worry about them bloating. Even on 6" tall second cut. Goes well with orchardgrass and meadow brome.

It has thicker cell walls which slow down the rate of digestion. Seems fairly winter hardy. Have a stand that's several years old.

Depending on how clean the field is I would seed it alone or with a bushel of oats.
