| At our township cemetery, a "burial plot", is a "burial plot", no matter how it is used. For a person residing in the township, there is a "plot fee", complete with a deed, which indicates ownership of the plot. Non-residents pay a larger ownership fee. If a casket is to be buried, there will also be an "opening and closing" fee at the time of need, which compensates the sexton/crew/backhoe for their work. If an urn containing ashes is to be buried on a previously purchased plot, there is a smaller charge for "opening and closing" to compensate the sexton for his labor--usually with a shovel. If a family already owns a plot, they are free to place a headstone/marker on the plot (in keeping with the rules for such, as may exist at the cemetery). There is no charge for the placement of a marker on a family's owned plot. showboat | |
