NASCAR has simply over thought the situation. I'm one of the biggest Dale Earnhardt Sr fans that ever watched a NASCAR race. And I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Jimmy Johnson..... But....IMHO, this new format should be called the "Make sure JJ doesn't equal the 7 championships of Earnhardt or Petty no matter how ridiculous we have to get to insure that outcome" rule.

Bill France Sr and Dale Earnhardt Sr are spinning at the moment..........

But at the same time JJ wouldn't have but 4 of those i think if not for the chase format. Would have to go back and double check points.

When If's and Buts become candy and nuts, what a merry Christmas it will be.....

Whatever points system was in place in any given year determined THAT championship. Teams and drivers develope stratagies based on what tracks they can win on, what races remain on the schedule, and who's chasing them (and THEIR strong tracks) Had a points system been different in any of the years JJ won a championship, their stratagy may have been different. Give the man his due....You don't back into 6 championships. They minimize "luck" and maximize opportunity. There were years where other drivers won more races in a given season than Earnhardt or Petty, but they won the championship.

I heard an interview with Dale Sr and Kurt Shelmerdine (Crew chief for 3 car for a couple of Dales titles) They were talking about how you win titles (at least under "old system") It's not as much about winning on days when you have the dominate car as it is getting a 5th place when you have a 10th place car.

With this new system, it won't be about who was best all year long. Just "make the play offs and get a hot streak right at the end". Sounds too much like NBA/NCAA basketball/NFL/MLB/etc...... I liked auto racing the way it WAS. No need to make it a "stick and ball sport" in my book.
