Subject: RE: cell phones

Dave and Ed,

Thank you both for your reasoned comments. These are interesting times. I see so much happening that was being dreamed about just a few years ago.

I'm a year or two from upgrading the phone I'm currently carrying. Unfortunately, the best phone for me might not be the phone I'll need to carry. It's that "app" thing that is getting in the way. The specialized app support for the phones (current and planned over the next couple years) for our business seems to be in exact reverse order to my preferences for the phones themselves. I need to stay reasonably comfortable with the hardware that will run the tools our sales people need.

That brings up another issue. Some of our suppliers have made technology choices for their website tools (Flash and Silverlight being two of them) that have ruined their ability to just make a mobile web page. They are now forced to write apps to get phone and tablet support. To me, an app is often just an annoying way to get information to me that would have been better suited to go in a well designed web page. I dislike dealing with apps. I'd much rather have properly written webpages that allow the suppliers to concentrate on the information, not on picking which horse(s) will win the technology race.
