What was wrong w/the 400 series hoes? What was a better hoe?

My Dad was a big fan of rotary hoes when they first came out many, many years ago. He bought a four section unit with a neighbor. Later the neighbor moved and they split it into two-two section hoes. Dad bought a third section. This was pulled by a Golden Jubilee Ford tractor with Overdrive. Third gear overdrive was the desired gear. The Ford didn't have any too much power and you had to be quick on the ends as the unit was a ground based unit. It had a pipe with some cables for a hitch. You would put this hitch on the rear end to pull the hoe backwards for "road transport".

Later Dad bought a mounted type 6 row 400. I now have a 30' sitting in the shed and have used it occasionally in the last several years. It is only used under unusual conditons of soil crusting where the plants cannot emerge.

Several years ago, I was at the Yetter facility to pick up some Yetter parts. I was able to observe the press assembling rotary hoe wheels. Some were Yetter orange, some were Deere green as well as other colors. I don't know if Yetter was making the wheels for Deere or just as replacements sold under their name. The hoe pieces were laid in a jig where a large press would set all the rivets in one tremendous shot.
