Most of the "grower" or "producer" types of labels were brought about as processors and brokers become more involved in the farm. When they are interviewed for media articles etc. they usually refer to the farmer as their growers or producers. It's actually a more accurate lable from their side of the indiustry. It just happens to be that they get more press coverage than the farmer and people see grower and/or producer more often than farmer now days. IMO. It does not matter to me. It does'nt change anything or cost anything. When I tell people we grow blueberries, I dont say we farm blueberries. I'd much rather be refered to as a blueberry grower than a blueberry farmer. But I am still a farmer as a whole. If someone asks me what I do for a living, I say I am a farmer. That is an all encompassing label and is more accurate IMO. The grower or producer labels have their places within and under the main label of farmer. |
