The logging contractor has a nice feller buncher that can remove every third row with very little damage to trees in the adjacent rows. We plan to thin down to 200 - 300 trees per acre then thin again or clear cut at 18 - 20 years of age. I plan to plant long leaf or slash pine in the clear cut plots. Blue berries, watermelon and pasture do well in this area but cotton, corn or soybean are not good options.
My plan is to remove every third row like you said. But I have some ground will produce 200 bu corn that's in pine. I used to grow corn/cotton on it. Trees are growing nicely but I am getting to the point that I dont like pine. Pine beetles is the reason. Timber company has around 15 thousand acres bordering me which is mostly pine with hardwood mixed. I prolly stay with pine and still maintain it. Trees look good. Just money I am looking at.
On the disk, the 480 disk bearing was a very simple fix to my issues.
The new bearing Amco has on the F-15 double offset disk flexwing 30 foot that we bought new has been a blessing. We disked thousands of acres without any bearings going out. Ran for years on same bearings, which was unheard of then. Then had one or two went out but then was time for new blades. So, I put all new bearings and "metal seals" and replaced most housings due to wear at bottoms.
