My two cents worth. Flying a cover on just before leaf drop will usually get you a stand as long as the rains come. I think if you planted turnips and/or radish at this time you would cut the tops off at harvest and set the plants back. Rye would be a better choice, but it would depend on the fall as to getting enough growth for grazing. As far as rye goes and following it with a corn crop, kill it early, at least two weeks ahead of corn planting. If you graze the rye in the fall if there is enough growth, the freezing will take out the compaction if cattle have not made deep tracks. Much more grazing in the spring, but you only want to graze them when the ground is dry. Rye rates vary by producer, but I like to plant 2 bushel as I want it thick for the roots, cover to suppress winter annuals, and to keep the coverage even to no-till into. Others may have a better idea.
