| Thanks everyone! I plan on using cereal rye in my corn stalks and tillage radishes in my bean stubble. However, I plant very late beans (3.1) and very late corn (113 day) for our area (NW Iowa). So it makes it difficult to integrate cover crops into our full season system of no-till. I'm going to try aerial seeding cover crops in early to mid August on the corn and as soon as the beans start turning color.
I figured there will always be variances in the testing procedure, ... you can never get 100% replication, especially when two soil samples, taken ten feet, have entirely different attributes. I think consistency in soil-testing does have some information to move forward on, ... it's surely better than nothing at all.
The reason I posted is because some of the neighbors have been seeing the same results in their no-till/cc farms as well and thought their might be something going on beyond the inaccuracies in soil testing.
For the nitrogen question, ... I use 100 pounds of NH3, 20 pounds liquid in furrow, and 60 pounds from the chicken litter. I usually apply for 250-270 bushel corn. Of course the bean stubble releases some nitrogen as well. | |
