From what I've heard from my EJ agent, it seems that they just want you to have a balanced portfolio insisting that market timing or individual stock picking is too risky. I think they're wrong, but that's where part of my IRA is. I had to laugh as I read a perspectus for one of their funds, it read that the strategy was for their fund managers to pick the most under-valued companies in a particular segment. This was after hearing the agent's spiel about the riskiness of individual stock picking and the difficulty of market timing. I went WOW, that fund manager thinks they are smarter than the market....and we all know how that usually turns out. I guess my opinion was jaded after going to too many consignment auctions, when something is cheaper than another similar item there is often a reason for it such as its a less productive investment.
