Yes, that is a weak point in the plot in both the movie and book. Gangrene would advance with the blood flow, up the leg and to the torso. He would have had systemic poisioning, but removing the other leg would have been unneccessary and useless. McMurtry goofed, and should have had an arrow in each leg. I drive my wife nuts with quotes from Lonesome Dove just tossed in at the odd moment. "I can fly. An old woman taught me."
