He didn't just borrow it to get him through the dry season...he's had it for 5+ months !
It sounds like you use it for a brief time, then put it away in a safe location. With that type of use it would have lasted most of your career. Being jostled to the field and back on a wagon every day shortened it's lifespan. Having the tank replaced isn't out of line.
