Can someone mathematically explain overcharging the smaller battery on a system with 2 batteries?

I guess I wasn't thinking when I said the smaller battery would get charged first. What you guys are describing is the way I would expect it to work. However, I'm sure I've read on here multiple times that the smaller battery will end up boiling itself to death (although I'm struggling to find any reference to that now as I'm searching). Also, whenever one battery goes out on a piece of equipment like a tractor or semi, everyone on here recommends replacing them both with a matched pair so the old one doesn't destroy the new one. Is there no merrit in this concept either?
