Subject: Re: 15" rows for corn silage

German Valley, IL
did 100 acres a year for about 7-8 years real big difference at first but at that time we planted 28,000-29,000 on 30" and 34,000 on 15" as the years went on we bumped both the populations up ... we seemed to peak on the 15" at 35500-36000 , eventually we tried the 30" corn at higher populations 35,000-36,000 seemed to be the sweet spot any higher the tonnage stayed the same so we were wasting seed ... 2 years ago we were doing tonnage checks and all the corn was running in the upper 20's didn't matter if it was 15" or 30" the best number corn did 32 ton on 30" ... we were in need of upgrading our planter at that time and we opted to not spend the money on a planter that we cold plant 15" with beings we have not been putting out beans for about 4 years now .... not saying 15" are not worth it there are benefits to it ... like a lot less chemical use , quicker canopy witch would really help right now with no rain in almost 4 weeks ... I have had it in my head to maybe play with twin rows to benefit both our silage end and cash crop side of the farm and still be able to use all our existing equipment but the planter
