Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND | The points in the distributor ground the neg side of the coil(if this is a neg ground tractor). Turn the engine so the points are closed, now you should see 0 volts at the point arm on up to the coil terminal the distributor connects to. With the points open you should have full voltage to the distributor side of the coil and on down to the point arm.. Connect a 12V test light to ground and to the coil terminal that goes to the distributor. Cranking the engine with the ignition on should make the test light flash on / off.
On rare occasion, the distributor housing can get enough corrosion under the hold down clamp to lose it's ground to the engine block.
