Not knowing much about hammer toe or anything about yours in particular, I can't promise a different pair of shoes will be enough to get the results you want.  If you are going that direction, you might want to get fitted at a running shoe store staffed by people who are serious runners (probably not a big box store).  If you have the right setup with normal feet, your feet should stay smooth, without blisters or excessive calus formations.  A good running store will have a wide selection, but might have to special order something for your needs.  They will also have the double layer socks mentioned above along with some other types of socks to reduce blisters.  Pretty much all of these shoes and socks are designed to wick away moisture and provide ventilation to keep you feet from getting wet with sweat.  Excess moisture can make you more prone to blisters.  They should also have a product called body glide that can be applied to problem areas to prevent blisters from friction.
