Fayetteville Arkansas | From what I've seen in those systems the GHGs almost double with poultry litter subsurface applied. The microbes which break down the litter under the surface put off more GHG than the microbes that break down the litter on the surface, as much as 50% more......but then runoff is reduced by putting it under the surface.....trade one evil for another.....so I guess in the long run it has to be decided which will cause the most environmental damage over time. Dr Dan Pote with USDA ARS has also built a dry litter subsurfer and BBI is bringing it into production but it too has some drawbacks in my mind with a small load size and the fact that rocks will clog the augers. | |
