Too bad about the gilt.  On the bright side, kids learn a lot about life with these projects.

If you have more gilts to farrow, you might want to have a pig puller and some sow lube handy.  You can get disposable plastic gloves with sleeves up to your arm pits.

You want to be careful with the pig puller so not to cause injury.  Even if you are not experienced at using one, you can sometimes get it around the head of a pig that you can otherwise only reach with your finger tips.  An experienced person can reach in farther with a pig puller without hurting anything.  A good amount of sow lube makes it a lot easier on the pig and sow.
