No one can "pull the plug" on the industry. How would they do that? Demand they stop producing ethanol?

Except that you only replace, maybe, a third of that in actual energy used.

"Considering the refineries are getting old and can not run at the efficiency they use too."

Refineries are continually upgraded, lowering efficiency is due to a)decreased demand and b)imported gasoline.

"I would say energy self sufficiency and security is more important. "

And Ethanol is a dumb way to go about trying for that.
