I have a Dell Dimension 8400 and have mixed IDE (PATA) drives with SATAs in the past, but I was using a master/slave setup. It worked fine.
From what you're describing, it sounds like you want to install two primary/boot drives, which would be a much bigger problem than simply mixing drives. I'd suggest one at a time if that is the case. I think you could hook both up and disable one of the drives via the bios, but that wouldn't be much help.
