I've seen others remove the auto shutoff valve as well. They are fun to get just right and not leak!

I can't see how the carb could be causing your backfire. If it was running OK with the old one and now it doesn't I'll just guess too lean? Try pulling the choke out a little to get it richer. If it is running rich and it has an exhaust manifold leak you could get backfire. Is it wet or damp when you are running the tractor? I'm thinking maybe the fire is jumping from one wire to the other or jumping in the cap. I guess a valve could be sticking or burnt, but you said the engine is full of gas. Kinda hard to imagine how an engine full of gas could be running too lean.

As other post said check your air cleaner, I have seen them full of dirt and not run right. That would explain your high fuel consumption with the old carb.
