Yeah that is pretty much the way it goes. I never have bought into the conspiracy theories about the USDA manipulating markets for whatever reason. A report such as this should pretty well take care of those claims. Do I think the USDA is always right? Oh, heavens no! I just think they are ill informed and working with outdated numbers a lot of the time. As far as endusers are concerned they are responsible for their own interests just like I am responsible for developing a marketing plan of my own. I believe we had a period of time back in late winter and spring where corn was below $3.50. I assumed that many endusers had covered needs at that time. If they chose to roll the dice and hope prices would go to $2.50 that is unfortunate. I can't do anything about that. I do feel sorry for the dairy farmer. They are in an almost hopeless situation. Are we drinking less milk or are we just over producing? Its a real pickle when the dairy and other livestock farmers need corn prices below our cost of production to make a profit. If everyone would care to remember grain farmers saw many years of $1.80 to $2.00 corn that didn't pay the bills. I was also a livestock producer at that time. In the years since it seems that livestock producers felt that they were entitled to cheap corn. It really sucks that livestock and grain farmers can't make money at the same time but it seems to be one or the other. When there was a massive glut of grain the government paid farmers not to produce. Well that didn't work out too well so we were told to find other markets for our product. So we did. Now the corn farmer is responsible for most any and all problems that beset this country. I don't know what the answer is but you are correct that cash renters are in big trouble. That game started back in 2007. The only thing that is going to stop that craziness is a sustainted period of sub $3.50 corn. I don't know what the answer is.
