Will dessicating sunflowers/milo save soil moisture?

If there is a late flush of weeds comming killing them would probably save some moisture.
What i would try to find out, if you do dessicate the sunflowers, take a soil core before and after dessication and dry in micowave oven, do the math and see if there a difference in soil moisture.
