Here is an update of the corn that was planted on May 5th into spring wheat stubble. The first, second and third photos is of the corn planted into a bare spot, it is 81 inches tall has 18 leaf collars and the kernels haved black layered( i think ) and has acumulated 2334 gdd`s. The fourth, fifth and sixth photos shows the corn planted into a 10 inch wide strip cleared of residue it has reached a height of 94 inches, has 18 leaf collars, kernels if not black layered they are close and have acumulated 2288 gdd`s. I have switched to using the air temperature to figuring gdd`s starting on 6/24 on this test. By the way the sensor at 6 ft is in the corn canopy. The pictures and gdd`s are for up to 9/12. The seed guide says 2280 gdd`s to black layer for this hybrid.

The ear from the bare soil (pictures 1, 2 and 3) tested 29.73% kernel moisture while the one from the 10 inch cleared strip tested 32.26% (pictures 4,5 and 6).

The ear from the bare soil had 16 rows times 31 kernels per row and the kernels of the ear weighed 190.1 grams ( .42 lb ).

The kernel weight figured out to be 72122 kernels/bu at 29.73% moisture and 86727 kernels/bu corrected to 15.5%.

The ear from the 10 inch cleared strip had 18 rows times 31 kernels per row and the kernels of the ear weighed 242.8 grams ( .54 lb ).

The kernel weight figured out to be 66472 kernels/bu at 32.26% moisture and 82919 kernels/bu corrected to 15.5%.

The kernels of the two ears mixed together had a test weight of 51 lbs.
