| Yield potential always starts with the base genetics first. Traits are simply insurance to protect yield if a pest "flares up". If you put the best traits in the world into a crappy hybrid, you still have a crappy hybrid. I've worked in corn breeding for 21 years and we breed ALL of our genetics as conventional hybrids first and then insert the traits after yield testing has shown an experimental hybrid worthy of going commercial. This way we always have new, high yielding conventional hybrids to offer as well as traited versions. | |
