 Colby, Kansas | Tensiometer likely won't work in this situation as we are talking about soil matric potentials much higher (dryer) than a tensiometer can capture. Capacitance type (i.e. watermark) sensors are largely not useful for dryland use either because of their similar range that is limited on dryer soils. The only true way to measure this would be a lysimeter (limited availability and very expensive to build new ones). Neutron attenuation may work if there was enough water use over the time period from physiological maturity to harvest.
