Subject: Re: HRW Wheat planting conditions

The main crop grown in SW ND is HRS, but some farmers do raise a bit of HRW. August and September are usually dry here and I have seeded into hard, dry soils many times, but this year we have received over 3" of rain since August 28. Fields should be dry enough to seed in a day or two. There is still some HRS that is not yet harvested and most HRW is no-tilled into HRS stubble. Optimum seeding dates are from September 10 to about September 30. Wheat seeded October 1 will only have one leaf by the time the soil freezes.
