Self insuring is also stacked against the farmer. #1 the government pays part of the insurance premium but does not credit the farmer that amount if he self insures. #2 If there is a catastrophic event, the government will suppliment the insurance payment with additional funds. The only way a farmer gets that is if he has commercial insurance. Personally, I quit carring insurance about 8 years ago and have only had 1 year that was a total loss. In the other 7 years any loss would not have covered the premiums.
