Subject: Will dessicating sunflowers/milo save soil moisture?

Southeast Colorado
Everyone here lets them dry down naturally but they do take quite a while and the plants stay green for a long time. I was just curious if the plant is still using very much moisture after the seeds have reached maturity. In this arid climate it looks like it would maybe pay to kill the sunflower and milo plants and save a little moisture for the next crop. Thoughts??
