Hay, That is some of my best ground! Most of my soils are medium productivity. I included some shots of the profile from this spring past when installing tile; Same field. As you can see, the topsoil is generally about 12-18 " with some spots where I have up to 4' of top soil (mostly in low areas between hills. Soil is extremely variable as well. I can change soil types 13 times in one round on one of my fields, and the average is 7 changes/round on the farm. Thats why every time I get over to ILL, and see that beautiful black soil (with no rocks), I always am in awe. We've improved the soil quite a lot with ridge-till-to-No-till for 27 years. That is one goal of the cover crops, is to hit the next paradigm in soil improvement. Plus, I get to deal with high power lines alot too. If you notice the one pic, those towers cross the whole farm on an angle, along the longest axis. 800,000 + volts is fun to use electrtonic equipment(gps, spray, NH3 monitors) around, and really fun to scout under, due to the "bite" from lost electricity. You should have heard them when they see my aerial photos to plan this or fungicides. "Are those train tracks"? Watching them work today (there were two planes working in tandem), I'm sure their "pucker factor" was rising at an exponential rate.
