I’ve been geo for 10-11 years. Installed myself with the encouragement of another farmer who’s on here. It’s not rocket science- if you have a backhoe you can run horizontal loops - after that it’s just a heat pump.
Old farm house, poor insulation straight resistance heat or LP would push right at $1000/month in my house. Now our total electric bill is $300 ish on the coldest months of the year. Was 91 today, geo never went above the low stage and house was less than 71 all day. We made a lot of other improvements over the years but the geo was huge. On the heat side before we did windows and siding with foam board it’d kick to stage 2 occasionally on a below 0 night, last 2 years it hasn’t gone to stage 2 at all. Only time it’s gone to stage 3 (full heat pump + resistance heat) is right after a power outage or if someone forgets to close a door (I have kids) - it shouldn’t really be a booster- more or less it’s incase of heat pump failure or it can’t keep up - but remember each btu of resistance heat costs 4x what a btu from the geo does.
Honestly it’s probably one of the best investments I’ve made, house is comfortable. Also don’t forget about hot water generation - while running it takes excess heat and will help your hot water heater basically for free.
I wondered about a DIY install. I have a backhoe and could easily install the ground loop. |
