I've used a number of outhouse in my days. My first grade class had his and hers outhouse but we did have modern toilet paper.
At home we were modern country folk with indoor plumbing and a home made septic system with modern toilet. But my cousin's still had an outhouse although they did have inside water with a pitcher pump over a well in their kitchen. Most rural people were modern by the time I can remember much but I do recall several neighbors still with functional outhouses.
Sears catalog was the usual fare though sometimes Montgomery Ward. I remember some offering the option of corn cobbs but don't remember me ever choosing that option. Guess I didn't know what I was missing. An opportunity lost. Although I do remember trying them out in the field though don't remember being impressed. It didn't catch on with me anyway. Seems like Emory cloth might be as good.
