near dyersville iowa | In 1995, i had 75 sows farrow to finish. the finisher was an old half slat building. I wanted to go to 150 ish sows and sell weaners. Then 8 dollar hogs hit. Then i got luck and got in psuedo rabies buyout. Hogs hit 30 bucks the day they hauled them away. Got back into it for a bit after that, but with 22 crates, no one around was buying 200 head at a time. I could see that there just wasnt a market here. And with only 100 acres of cropland, I got shut out of the build a bigger building thing. All the neighbors had livestock at that time, and at that time you didnt haul manure 10 miles. Having a job and trying to get fats sold was always a challenge. So I decided to quit pigs. | |
