Subject: RE: If you think beef is expensive

I've come to understand my "understanding" of real world economics might be flawed or certainly influenced by making a living on the small margins in AG. I look at the price of a new truck. Something that could actually help provide income, and say no way can I afford that (though my 2003 one ton Duramax has hauled multiple millions of dollars worth of cattle). But driving home from Denver yesterday I was passed by dozens, most will never pull anything. I was stuck in a traffic jam for awhile. In front of me was a late model dually Power Stroke with a topper and Montana plates ??? I'm guessing the price of beef probably wasn't a spending priority for the driver.

I'm guessing those same restaurant customers don't grill hot dogs out by the pool. There is no doubt we have experienced the perfect storm. Low supply and great demand and that can change. What has brought about these cattle prices wasn't dependent on the mother struggling to feed her kids. If it was this party would have been over long ago, though there is certainly an argument to be made on the real value of beef compared to most of the other junk in grocery stores.
