nw NC | Very, very dry here in N.C. Most cattle owners have been feeding hay all spring as pastures have produced little growth for grazing. 1st cutting grass hay crop normally being made now is about 1/4 or less of normal. My wheat crop for silage was harvested last week, it made 1/2 of last year's yield. I have no corn planted as soil is too hard for no-till planter to penetrate the soil and no moisture there to sprout a seed. Guy who delivers artificial insemination supplies told me on Tuesday that a large dairy two counties south of me was telling that it looked as if they would have to replant 500 acres of silage corn if there were to be enough rainfall to soften the ground enough to ever do so. Weather forecast shows chance of showers every few days with forecast precipitation amounts of "less than one tenth inch". And that is what falls... if any. NC map below. I am at the "X" in northwestern part of the state. Going to be a tough year.
