I think I've put in enough tanks in my life to get an award of something. It all depends on your flow of water and number of head to service and how far off the beaten path they are. From galv. ring tanks to galv. rectangular, cement tanks and even tire tanks. Even been forced to use fiberglass rounds. You can make them all work, but for dollar spent and time to install for under 400 head of cattle on them I would vote for 13' dia. tires. Use around a 1/2 yd of cement in them, then also drive some pipe to make encloser so cattle can't get in them. When dealing with more than 400 head go with galv. ring tanks with concrete floors in them to hold storage, it all depends how far cattle are traveling to water and your flow. When we do them, we like to use 27' dia. rings for storage. We find easier to use tanks for needed storage vs. plumbing storage tanks in a system. Only trough I've ever had shot up was a concrete tank some paint huffers came across on the desert and decided to try and blow a hole in concrete with an AK-47. They finally got it done.
