North of London | I posted before that my wage was 78 cents an hour for my first job when I was 15 years old.
that was what everyone was getting for the job and we were forking green pea vines into pea viners that threshed the green peas out.
There would be 8 of us each feeding one machine and then 3 more in back keeping everything operating and filling wheeled carts with the peas to be hauled away to the canning factory to be processed into cans.
The wage rose to 82 cent the next year and then the following year I got a job working for a telephone company tearing our overhead wires and poles where cable had been ploughed into the ground and got $1.25 an hour but only 8 hours a day and 5 days a week instead of 7 days a week and sometimes over 12 hour days at the peas.
This while I was in high school. | |
