Pilot Grove, Missouri | Got 5 cents a bale to haul hay for a old guy who ran a Kent feed store in town. Clapped out and rusted out old 2 ton Chevy flat bed from the 50's. That was fun to throw every bale up on. Two guys on the ground (me being one) got a nickle, stacker on the truck I think got 7.5 cents so did the owner/driver as I remember he charged a 25 cents a bale. I think I started the summer before my freshman year in high school. I quit early in the 3rd year. The other guy on the ground would smoke pot riding back to the barn and wouldn't do crap to stack inside the barn and I got stuck stacking the vast majority % of every bale unloading the truck (stacker only threw off the truck and didn't really stack). My butt would be dragging before the end of the day but the old guy was oblivious to the dope head and even complained to my Dad that somehow I was the slacker. My Dad knew the real story from me and basically told him off and had me quit (which I was happy to do).
My first wage job was in November 1983 as a senior in high school (working after school). I went to work for the local independent telephone company for $3.35/hr (minimum wage then as well). I started out designing and coding simple accounting software programs for them on their DEC (Digitial Equipment Corporation) PDP 11/44 mini-computer. That job continued through college until I went work for AT&T Network Systems after graduation. Since it's November again I guess my "day job" career in telecom is now up to 42 years. | |
