NW IA | Not sure it was the lowest pay I ever earned. I was maybe 14 years old and pulled the rope on a neighbors bale sling dropping them in the hay barn, then pulled it back to the end of the track.
When we were done the farmer asked what he owed me. $2.50/ hour was the going rate at that time and I was a little hesitant to ask that much because I'd never had such a slack job baling hay. He said, No, I'm paying you $5/ hour because the kid driving the tractor on the rope charged him that much for sitting on his butt. I told him that was too much but he wasn't having it. Any farm kid from 50 years ago knows how rich I felt with that money in my hand on the way home. | |
