New London, Wisconsin | I have been watching this with great interest. I expect a court case will settle it against the taking of the aircraft. But by the time that happens the poor guys plane will be lawn art at best. He had an engine failure which might have been a simple fix. Those do happen occasionally. It wasn't an intentional landing. It's proper protocol in an emergency.
If this case is decided in favor of the Rez, it's going to have a lot of ripple effect. We have two reservations near us. Green Bay's Austen Strauble airport I'm pretty sure is in the Oneida reservation And the Menominee tribe north of us is a Rez that I fly over now and then.
I remember the wave of hostilities from reservations in the 1970's. It was awful and left some bitterness on both sides. I'd sure hate for that to happen again. Red Lake is heading down that path.
