I've had both kinds. Had the chisel for a couple years. It got traded back in for a ripper. The one I had was a ridging machine. If the ground is dry or hard you will get tired of changing the points. I had a 510 JD a while ago if I didn't want the shanks to do much I would take out the shear bolts and let them swing back.
