Faunsdale, AL | Champion have always been slow rpm COMPRESSOR compared to everything else. Haven’t bought one in many decades so don’t know how they’re building them now.
The oldest Champion I had here was a 5 hp we bought used. It was the shop compressor. 5 hp two stage with a 1750 rpm motor. That lasted a couple decades. Needed one to run a parlor one day when the couple years old Quincy locked up, so we grabbed the old Champion and then it went to running around 12 hours a day every day.
After a few years of that it started knocking and I decided to open up the side cover on the compressor and see what was what. I found dip tubes on the rod caps and shims to set the bearing clearance. Removed some shims and put it back together! Filled with good oil and turned it back on. It eventually needed rings replaced and I decided to leave it in place as a backup and replaced it with a 10 hp oil-less Champion. That thing has to be 60 years old. I should look at the tag on the tank to see exactly when it was made. | |
