Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | Getting elevator speed when the separator is off would cause this problem.
Most sensors work by shorting the signal wire to ground and then releasing it. The system "counts" these pulses and uses a calibration number to convert to a useful measurement such as RPM. If the elevator speed signal wire got rubbed bare or mouse damage, it might be getting shorted to ground.
This causes false pulses which the system believes to be a true indication of elevator speed. Replacing the sensor or swapping it with another of the same model (careful many look alike) may solve the problem. If a wire is bare somewhere finding the bad spot (often difficult) and repairing it might solve the problem. The elevator speed branch goes from a tee at the clean grain elevator sensor to the Ag Leader module that works with header height and transmission ground speed.
I have installed Ag Leaders in many CIH combines in the past and it seemed that the elevator sensor was a bit finicky. Usually the problem was a lack of elevator speed to the Ag Leader. A new sensor usually cured the problem. On some of those combines, the chopper shaft sensor was the same and swapping them sometimes helped.
