Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
You mention making an extension. This reminded me of what my installers did on my Deere tractor where they needed to use the 9 pin connector that you are working with.

In my case, the 9 pin connector needed to be connected to an Ag Leader device to work with the CAN steering on my Deere 8310R tractor. The cable could have been plugged into the 9 pin connector in its original location and everything should work fine. However, that meant that the cable would be sticking up out of the connector and need to make a rather sharp bend on its way to its eventual destination.

My installer removed a piece of trim and was able to relocate the 9 pin connector loose into a cavity below the piece of trim. This allowed the cable to be connected there and nicely routed to its final destination. The trim piece was reinstalled which covered the connection and cable. He installed an empty 9 pin connector in the hole formerly occupied by the original 9 pin connector. This "filled" the hole and allowed the original dust cap to be reused. The end result was a neat install without the danger of the sharp bend in the cable. The connecting cable was hidden for the most part.

From your pictures it appears that this approach might be workable for your tractor also. Maybe the base holding the 9 pin connector could temporarily be removed and the 9 pin connector relocated in the cavity below. This might work if there is an obvious path to the final destination for your cable. The then empty hole in the base could b e filled with an empty connector and dust cap such as was done on my tractor.
