coast of Maine | Thats correct.China/Mexico/Brazil/South Africa/Peru all can send their veg/fruit with nearly no limits.Ag pest safety limits yes.So us fruit/veg growers suffer always from cheap imports.I listen to growers of commodity crops and animal ag with a bit of wonder. As a general rule we get nearly(none on my farm) zero support for any programs. What we do get from the government is just tax bills. There is a huge problem now with Chinese competition in the apple world. The pacific northwest grows about 140 million bushel annually. They can only market about 120 million bu. in the USA as the total USA consumption from all regions is about200 million bu...So now China is steadily taking over the markets of exporting apples to other regions...Why? China now grows 2 Billion bu apples year.Thats now 10 times total USA growth.Ag is headed to grown elsewhere if there was an even playing field of wage and environmental factors there would still be USA veg/fruit growers.I doubt that will change. If theArgentinian/Mexican beef could be held to the same standards of growers here ,wage environmental etc then there would be no issues. This is the avenue I feel we all in ag should focus on..make them pay the same wages/follow the same husbandary rules or chemical laws as here. Then no issues on imports. The greenies should be all in on these rules. | |
