Southeast WI
This will be corn next year and we always follow the spring rainfall quite closely. Normal to above normal rain and we will plant green and terminate immediately. Otherwise if its trending dry we will kill it 1-2 weeks ahead of planting. Even early kill gives significant weed suppression (and yes I do have that data collected by a researcher friend of mine and have posted here).

I would love to plant pumpkins and squash into thick rye, however we dont have irrigation so thats a hard no. Rye can dry the ground out severely and seed planted 1-1.25" deep could lie in dry soil for weeks and screw up our year. This crop HERE has to be in by June 1 and get up like a rocket ship to be ready to harvest by Sept 10 (best case). Not willing to risk that with a crop that grosses $6-7000 per acre. Would be a lot more if we could retail it all here. Sadly thats maybe 20% of our sales.
