>You need a collet chuck or at least a hexagon collet holder and a set of small collets to chuck up in your 3 jaw for that project to make things more accurate and easier instead of the chunk of wood. Collets become addictive when you make small parts. Easy on the threads and secure. But I have used your method before I had the collets to work with and it works just fine too.
