I’ve been involved in a couple that didn’t obey the rules of thumb and had oil in the wrong place for the failure that was eventually found, or had an oddball failure that an inframe overhaul didn’t fix.
It’s worth something knowing where the leakage is before you tear it apart.
If it’s a head gasket you should be seeing some pressure buildup/gasses in the radiator as soon as you start the engine. Might be worth using a combustion gas detector on it. The one I got from NAPA says it reacts slower on a diesel than a gas burner but it should still show the same color change.
