Working with perfectly clean metal, mig is fine. For farm welding, stick is superior. Steel, aluminum, iron, etc - stick welding just works.

Find an old Miller Dial Arc 250. Phenomenal welding machine that can typically be had for a couple of Benjamins.

We have a 250X mig welder and an old Dial Arc. I use the stick welder at least 9/10 times, if not more.

Get a good welder and play with a bunch of different rods and see what works for you. 6010 and 7018 are my go to. Used drill stem gets 6011.

Aluminum rod is fun to play with and comes in handy. Ni-rod and an old barbeque grill makes iron welding a breeze.
